Find Relief From Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye may impact your life for a variety of reasons. A dry climate may be the reason, but that is seldom the case in Langley. Computer use, contact lenses, health problems, or medication are all common causes of dry eye. However, many people experience dry eye without any obvious reasons. This is typically an ongoing issue and considered dry eye syndrome.

Understanding Dry Eye Syndrome

Your eyes are constantly creating natural tears to lubricate the mucous membranes of the eyes. These tears also keep the eyes moist, clean the surface of the eyeball, and protect your eyes. There are two reasons you may be suffering from dry eye, either your tear glands are not producing enough tears or your tears are of poor quality.

Quantity of Tears

Your eyelid glands are responsible for producing enough tears to keep your eyes lubricated. If these glands are producing tears slower than your tear ducts are draining it from your eyes, they will feel dry.

Your tears are made of a combination of water and a natural oil called meibum. If there is not enough meibum in your tears they will evaporate too quickly, leaving the surface of your eyeball too dry. If there is not enough water your tears will be oily, causing your vision to be blurry.

Common symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Redness in the eyes
  • Burning or itching eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Foreign body sensation or grittiness under the eyelids
  • Excess white stringy mucous
  • Blurry vision
  • Heavy eyelids
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Uncomfortable contact lenses

Restasis for Dry Eye Treatment

While it may seem that dry eye is an irritation, the long-term effects can be devastating. Untreated, dry eye syndrome can cause corneal abrasions, scarring, and permanent vision loss. Visit Willoughby Doctors of Optometry for an eye exam and talk to your optometrist about a prescription for Restasis, medicated eye drops to treat dry eye.
