Your kids deserve their best start in life. Giving them the tools they need to succeed at school can create a launch pad that will carry them through their studies and into their career. An annual eye exam could mean the difference between academic success and struggling to get by.
We take great pride in helping your children succeed. We build relationships with our clients, knowing your kids’ eyes are healthy their whole lives is important to us. Seeing your family’s annual exam means the rest of the year success in sports and school.
Some children are a little nervous about getting an eye exam. Before coming in, ensure them that the tests are painless, easy, and quiet. We will test their eyes with lights, lenses, and cameras. We always create a comfortable environment where they feel they can contribute.
Each member of the household should have their eyes examined every year. Make an appointment to bring the entire family in to see us at Willoughby Doctors of Optometry.
Children’s first eye exam should take place when they are 6 months old. This eye exam tests your baby’s ability to use both eyes in conjunction, their visual response to stimuli, and the health of their eyes. Knowing your baby’s eyes are developing properly can set your mind at ease.
As your kids get older we will ask for their responses to visual acuity tests with pictures, numbers or letters, depending on their ability. Their eyesight is still developing and their schooling depends on clear vision. During their formative elementary school years, we check their acuity, eye teaming, and colour vision. We inspect for binocular conditions like crossed eyes and lazy eye, as well as nearsightedness and farsightedness, all conditions that can be mitigated with early detection.
These annual eye exams are a good habit to create in your children when they are small, so they can grow to be adults, they can confidently take care of their visual health. Encourage them to find out whether their post-secondary insurance coverage includes eye care, so they can ensure their university performance is the best it can be.
Should your child suffer from myopia, or nearsightedness, we have ways to help control it. More young people are being diagnosed with myopia every year, but we are developing new ways to prevent myopia from progressing. At Willoughby Doctors of Optometry, we focus on multifocal contact lenses or eye drops to control myopia. Find out more here.
